We the People Events
The Center for the Constitution, the Maryland Department of Education and the Center for Civic Education will host a workshop for teachers from Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia in preparation for Constitution Day 2010.
About this Workshop
Keynote: Mary Beth Tinker will give the keynote address focusing on constitutional rights since Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District.
Lecture: Constitutional Scholar Michael Meyerson will lead discussions on additional cases defending students' constitutional rights.
Lesson Demonstrations: Elementary, Middle and High School mentor teachers will lead concurrent sessions from the We the People curriculum, Project Citizen and Representative Democracy in America DVD series.
Simulated Congressional Hearing: Students from a local school will demonstrate a mock Simulated Congressional Hearing as part of the We the People program.
What is Provided
Meals: Breakfast and lunch will be provided at no cost.
Teaching Resources: Teachers will be eligible to receive a classroom set of We the People textbooks, Project Citizen textbooks, and Representative Democracy in America resources.
Constitution Day Lesson Plans: Each teacher will receive Constitution Day lesson plans to use on September 17, 2010.
Recertification Credits: You will receive documentation of the Seminar's contact hours to qualify you for professional development from your local school system, according to your own school policies.
"We, the People" Through Primary Documents: A Teacher Workshop Sponsored by the Library of Virginia and the Center for the Constitution

What role did Virginians play in the founding of the United States? What were their contributions to the nation's founding documents: the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights? These and other questions will be explored during the "‘We, the People' Through Primary Documents" workshop. Teachers will spend the morning with Professor John P. Kaminski, historian, founder, and director of the Center for the Study of the American Constitution at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Staff members from the Library of Virginia will demonstrate lesson plans and share resources from the "Shaping the Constitution" Web portal, which makes available digital copies of important documents from the Library of Virginia and the Library of Congress related to America's Founding Era and the United States Constitution. In the afternoon, teachers will learn techniques for teaching the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution curriculum using primary documents.
There is no charge for accepted participants.
Lunch will be provided. Participants will receive a certificate for eight hours that may be used toward recertification credits. Sessions will take place at the Library of Virginia, 800 E. Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia, 23219-8000.

Teachers will spend the morning in the Boeing Learning Lab participating in the Constitution in Action Simulation and learning how to use the National Archives documents in the classroom. The Center for the Constitution, James Madison University and the Center for Civic Education will host a We the People and Project Citizen Saturday Seminar for Virginia teachers. Teachers will learn about We the People and Project Citizen while exploring the topic of "How have the values and principles embodied in the Constitution shaped American institutions and practices?"
About the Seminar
Lecture: Constitutional scholar Dr. John Christopher Arndt will focus his remarks on the question of "How have the values and principles embodied in the Constitution shaped American institutions and practices?" Dr. Arndt is the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Letters and Professor of History at James Madison University.
Lesson Demonstrations: Mentor teachers will lead sessions from the We the People curriculum and Project Citizen curriculum.
Simulated Congressional Hearing: Teachers will be trained in how to implement the
Simulated Congressional Hearing, which serves as the main assessment tool used in We the People.
Project Citizen Portfolios: Teachers will be trained in how to guide students through a curriculum that teaches students how to monitor and influence public policy in their communities.

Teaching Resources: Teachers will receive a classroom set of We the People textbooks and Project Citizen textbooks.
Mileage Reimbursement: Teachers will receive mileage reimbursement for their travel.

About this Seminar
This seminar will bring teachers into the courtrooms of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. In the morning, teachers will focus on how to integrate Supreme Court decisions into the We the People curriculum. In the afternoon, teachers will participate in ‘The First Amendment and Social Media: Student Rights, Wrongs, and Responsibilities' mock trial with Chief Judge Royce C. Lamberth who serves as United States District Judge for the District of Columbia.
Chief Judge Lamberth regularly presides over courtroom simulations for high school teachers
and students in his D.C. courtroom. In their evaluations, students describe him as "cool beans" and teachers say that he is "approachable, down-to-earth, and surprisingly open." As the first presiding judge of the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA), he served during the September 11 attacks in 2001.
His broad range of experience, his forthcoming style, and his friendly demeanor make his educational programs not only content rich but entertaining and memorable.
What We Provide
Teaching Resources: Teachers will be eligible to receive a classroom set of We the People textbooks (30 student textbooks and one teacher's edition) and lesson plans from the federal
courts.
Meals: Lunch will be included for all teachers.

High school teachers who have attended a We the People seminar and are interested in implementing the We the People Simulated Congressional Hearing in their schools are invited to attend the 2011 Virginia We the People High School State Finals in Richmond, Virginia from February 3-4, 2010. On Thursday, February 3, teachers will participate in a two-hour training session on the logistics and strategies for competing in the We the People competition. After the training, teachers are invited to attend the judge and volunteer reception and dinner. On Friday, February 4, teachers will serve as a volunteer during the high school We the People State Finals.
Hotel room and board will be provided at no cost to the teachers. Travel reimbursement is also available. However, teachers must arrive in Richmond by 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 3, to participate in the full training, dinner and competition. Teachers will receive a full classroom set of We the People textbooks.
