How the Stipend Works

NEH provides each participant with a stipend of $1200, intended to cover costs for meals, accommodations, reading materials, and travel expenses.  A portion of the stipend will be retained by the Center to pay for accommodations, meals, and reading materials.  Participants may request a roommate in order to lower the deduction for accommodations.  The remainder of the stipend will be distributed on the final day of the workshop.

Travel

Participants will need to make their own travel plans and pay for their own travel costs upfront.  The remaining stipend distributed at the end of the workshop should cover these expenses for most participants.  Under extreme circumstances, additional funds may be available to participants who spend more than $627.25 on travel expenses; however, limitations will apply, and you should inquire with the Center in advance to see if you are eligible.

The closest airport to Montpelier is in Charlottesville (CHO), approximately 30 minutes away.  However, this is a smaller airport with fewer flight options, and often with higher prices.  The next closest airport is Dulles (IAD), just under 2 hours away, and then Reagan National (DCA) and Richmond (RIC) each approximately 2 hours away.  There are also train stations in Charlottesville (40 minutes), Culpeper (30 minutes), and Fredericksburg (1 hour).

You will also be responsible for planning your own ground transportation to and from the airport or train station.  Once we have a complete roster for each week, we will ask participants for permission to share their contact information with fellow participants, so that you may coordinate travel plans with each other and share the cost of ground transportation.   We recommend contacting http://www.accesstaxi.info/ or www.lightfootlimo.com.  You might also decide to rent a car, which may come in handy during the week.
