We the People High School State Competition
Saturday, February 7 in Richmond, VA
Patrick Henry Executive Office Building1111 East Broad Street
For the first time, the Virginia We the People High School Competition will be sponsored by Governor Kaine and will be held in the Patrick Henry Executive Office Building in Capitol Square in Richmond, on Saturday, February 7, 2009. The We the People program helps students understand the history and principles of our Constitution and Bill of Rights. A major component of the We the People program is the competition at which students simulate a congressional hearing answering questions about constitutional principles from a panel of judges, serving as Congressmen. This year the Patrick Henry building will offer high school students a wonderful opportunity to discuss these constitutional principles in the same committee rooms and offices where our state officials conduct the business of government. The Patrick Henry building is also directly across the street from the Richmond State Capitol. Students will also have the opportunity to tour the Capitol and see where Virginia General Assembly debates legislation. The winner of Virginia's competition then goes on to compete against winning teams from states across the nation in a national competition in Washington, DC, while the second place team will get a day-trip to James Madison's Montpelier to tour the newly restored home of our Father of the Constitution.
